Agricultural Programs

Carlton Trail Regional College supports local agriculture by providing training opportunities to local producers. If you are interested in expanding or enhancing your operation, CTRC has programs designed specifically for you.

Grain Marketing - Advancing Your Grain Marketing Strategies [SIAST] | Humboldt
Description: This course is for producers wishing to incorporate the use of futures and/or options in their marketing programs. You will gain an appreciation of the uses and limitations of these marketing strategies within a grain enterprise. Highlights include assessing potential hedging strategies, examining potential strategies to incorporated Fixed Price Contracts and/or Early Payment Options available from the CWB, and commodity options and their uses/limitations within a grain enterprise.

Commercial Pesticide Applicator: On-Farm Fumigation [SIAST] | Humboldt
Description: This course provides you with the basic knowledge of using Aluminum Phosphide for control of insects stored in grain and control of ground squirrels on your own farm. It is also for elevator employees to control insects in grain stored in the elevator. Separate application must be made to Sask Ag & Food for a license after completing the course. Part of this course was formerly known as “Grain Fumigation.”

AgExpert Analyst - Intro
Description: This course is designed to enable you to set up a complete set of farm books using AgExpert Analyst software. Basic computer and bookkeeping skills are essential.

Grain Marketing Basics [SIAST] | Humboldt
Description: This workshop will provide you with a sound understanding of basic grain marketing principles and strategies. This information will enable you to identify marketing opportunities within your grain enterprise that will increase the returns to your production system. Highlights of the course include examining key factors that influence grain price, pricing options available through the Canadian Wheat Board, and the role of technical and fundamental analysis in the establishment of grain prices.

AgExpert Analyst - Advanced
Description: This hands-on course enables you to take advantage of advanced features in AgExpert Analyst software. You will generate and analyze various reports and tools to support the farm management process. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating integrity of reported information from the database to government programs. You will also have an opportunity to identify features to use in your own operation and to establish a plan for further skills enhancement. It is recommended that you have an understanding of AgExpert Analyst software or have participated in the Intro to AgExpert course. Software is available for an additional fee.

AgExpert - Field Manager
Description: This hands-on course uses AgExpert Field Manager PRO software, which is an innovative crop record keeping and planning system that gives you access to all of your crop production data. Plan to make more money with crop plans that identify income opportunities. You can create detailed input plans and calculate different scenarios, including rotation options, that show you how to save the most on expenses. By entering your day-to-day field activities, you’ll be able to quickly analyze field histories and enhance your farm management.

Targets for Success
Description:       This one-day workshop is for producers who want a better understanding of the profitability and costs of their farming or ranching operation. By calculating your farm’s cost of production, you will be able to make more informed management decisions with respect to: the most profitable crops on your farm, the cost effectiveness of crop inputs, whether to buy or produce livestock
feed, and whether to purchase or lease additional land. You will calculate your break-even yield and price to determine what you need to cover your cash costs and produce a profit.

Description: Still keeping those receipts in the shoe box? This two-day course is an intro to basic record keeping so that anyone from any background (not just farming) can get a handle on their paperwork, before learning an accounting system such as Simply Accounting or AgExpert.

Description:

The SIAST Office Education Program, offered through Carlton Trail Regional College in Humboldt, offers a well-rounded base of knowledge and skill development to promote its graduates to the leading edge of the business environment. Receive practical and applied training on the most up-to-date aspects of office administration.

Red Cross First Aid/CPR with AED | Humboldt
Description: This course includes First Aid & CPR Guidelines 2005, and meets OHS regulations for Standard First Aid. These are comprehensive first aid & CPR techniques for those who need training for work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the workplace or home. We cover a variety of topics from basic (such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR Level C, prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth topics, such as sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine. Truck Driver Training | Humboldt
Description: Have you always wanted to get your 1A license and never had the time? This is your chance. With only two students per instructor, this two-week program will provide you with many hours of on-the-road training. The Air Brake practical and road test are administered at the end of the program. Congratulations! You now have your 1A license.

Heavy Equipment Operator [SIAST] | Wakaw
Description: Work in the construction industry, pipeline or oil patches, forestry, or for your local RM. Our Heavy Equipment Operator program provides the knowledge and skill development for this career choice. After successful completion of two theory courses, you will receive specialty training on two pieces of equipment: backhoe, crawler tractor, excavator, front end loader, motor grader, motor scraper, or skid steer loader.

Cost: $11,500 tuition + $130 books
Additional Info: You will have 180 hours in-the seat training, and receive First Aid/CPR "C" and Ground Disturbance II Certificate training with this program.

Ground Disturbance | Humboldt
Description: This course is designed for planners, managers, supervisors and employees who are or will be required to develop, plan, and implement any kind of ground disturbance. Topics presented will include identifying what ground disturbance is; what permits will be required; how to locate and identify underground facilities; regulations associated with ground disturbance; reclamation and safety requirements; and how to minimize the impact on the environment. Typical agreements and contracts associated with ground disturbance operations will also be reviewed.

Welding - Pressure Pipe | Humboldt
Description: Prepare for the Saskatchewan Initial Pressure Welders Test. Students must have 5,400 hours trade time in order to qualify for this class. You will be setting up six-inch schedule 80 pipe coupon from start to finish, and be given instruction in proper techniques needed to satisfy the requirements of the initial pressure test. Hands-on training with some theory included. Two-inch training/testing also available if you have successfully completed your six-inch ticket.

Forklift Operator Safety Training | Humboldt
Description: Learn all aspects of forklift safety, including operating controls, data plates, safety equipment, proper fuel handling, battery power and lift trucks, handling emergencies, load handling, and much more. A temporary license is issued upon completion; however, 10 hours of practical on-the-job training under a licensed driver is now required to obtain a permanent license.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods | Humboldt
Description: Every worker in Canada who is handling, offering for transport, or transporting dangerous goods is required to be trained. Topics include basics of the legislation; the Classification system; shipping names, classes, UN Number and packing groups; and information required on the shipping document. Also covered are the requirements regarding mixed loads; segregation of dangerous goods; choosing proper means of containment; proper use of all equipment; and ERAP's Emergency Response and Reporting Requirements.

WHMIS | Humboldt
Description: This course gives you a working knowledge of The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), which is Canada’s national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are cautionary labeling of containers of WHMIS “controlled products”, the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDS’s) and worker education and training programs. Our instructors will adapt each course to apply more directly to a certain classes’ needs, and encourage students to bring actual MSDS’s of chemicals they are using in their place of work. Students will have their own WHMIS workbook and WHMIS Handbook.

Power Engineering | Humboldt
Description: Fireman Level
This course will assist students preparing to write the Department of Municipal Government Protection Services Boiler and Pressure Vessel Unit Fireman's Certificate. This program is appropriate for persons working as building operators in manufacturing processes dealing with steam or hot water boilers. Topics include lower pressure heat boilers, fuel and firing equipment, automatic controls, jumps, piping fittings, valves, steam and hot water heating, ventilation, basic electricity, and the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Act.

Improve skills and knowledge of facilities using steam or hot water boilers, refrigeration equipment, pumps and heating systems. Water treatment and quality control in boilers and cooling systems are also covered. Fifth Class is the certification level for low pressure boiler operation, usually related to residential apartment and commercial buildings, and operators are limited to boiler operations of 103 kPA maximum steam pressure. Successful students will be well-prepared to challenge the Provincial 5th Class Exam.

Plumbing and Pipefitting [SIAST] | Humboldt
Description: You will gain entry-level knowledge and skill development in plumbing installation, water supplies, waste systems, and plumbing fixtures. As a residential, commercial, or industrial plumber, you will work in factories, plants, and similar establishments, be employed by a contractor, or set up your own business. Upon becoming indentured, successful students can apply to the Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission to receive credit for Level 1 technical training.

Description: You will learn to produce and interpret basic shop drawings and piping sketches as used at a typical work site. You will study the trade's code book and learn to apply code regulations to the installation of a residential plumbing system.

Name: MATH - Applied Mathematics
Description: The course reviews basic mathematics and the metric system of measurement. You will re-examine basic mathematical concepts as they apply to the Plumbing and Pipefitting trades.

Name: SCI - Trade Science
Description: The course provides students with an understanding of basic scientific principles that apply to the plumbing/pipefitting trade.

Name: WORK - Work Experience
Description: You will gain valuable experience through a two-week job placement in the industry. You will have the opportunity to apply your trade related technical skills as you increase your understanding of the workplace and employer needs.

Name: RIGG - Safety, Knots and Rigging
Description: You will study general safety as it applies to the plumbing/pipefitting trades. You will develop skill in the safe lifting and moving of materials and equipment used in the shop. You will become familiar with WHMIS and articles of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that apply to the trades.

Name: TOOL - Basic Tools and Materials
Description: You will be introduced to the various hand and power tools used to install and join the different types of piping systems used in the plumbing/pipefitting trades.

Name: GAS - Gasfitting
Description: You will learn how to install and test a domestic natural gas piping system. The course emphasizes the safety factors involved in working with natural and propane gas and the importance of accurate code interpretation.

Name: STEA - Hydronic Heating Systems
Description: You will be introduced to the various types of boilers and hot water heating systems. You will learn to install circulating pumps and piping systems. You will have the opportunity to practice installing different heating and piping systems in the shop.
Industrial Utility Worker | Humboldt
Description This eight-week course offers instruction on an entry-level set of skills and work-safe practices necessary for employment as a utility worker, applicable to trade contractors and large industrial construction sites.

Confined Space | Humboldt
Description:
You will be made aware of the hazards in confined spaces and know how to execute an entry safely. Identification of confined spaces and hazard identification, evaluation and control are discussed. The course reinforces the need for proper pre-planning procedures and provides rescue methods should the confined space worker be in peril. Content includes entry procedures, SCBA equipment, and rescue techniques and safety equipment. All OH&S legislation pertaining to confined spaces and SCBA will be covered. Each student will be provided with a workbook complete with all relevant OH&S regulations.

H2S Alive | Humboldt
Description: The Enform H2S Alive course is recognized by every company involved in the Oilfield Industry, and is generally regarded as adequate training by Oil Companies that require contractors to have Hydrogen Sulphide training. Students who successfully complete the requirements of the course will receive a temporary certificate, followed by a wallet card from Enform that expires in three years. Standard Safety instructors take great care to ensure that everyone achieves the 70% that is required to pass the written exam.

Description: Learn entry-level welding skills in SMAW (stick) and GMAW (MIG) welding. The program content is matched to today’s employer needs. The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship & Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) grants credit for Level 1 apprenticeship training. Students are granted credit for hours in school once they become indentured apprentices.

You will practice fundamental employability skills related to oral and written communications. You will also learn personal employability skills and the effect of attitudes and behaviours on a successful job search.
MATH 125
Industrial Mathematics
The course covers whole numbers, common and decimal fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, angular measurements, and length, area and volume measurements in the imperial and metric systems. You will also learn to perform calculations as applied to the trade.
METL 100
Metallurgy & Metal Heat Treatments
You will become familiar with the physical and chemical properties of commonly used metals in the welding trade. You will study the effect of the heating and cooling cycle involved in welding operations (with particular attention given to the heat affected zone). You will also review the use of heat to correct distortion and to change the physical properties of metals, and the classification system for identifying metal.

Blueprint Interpretation
You will develop your ability to read and interpret basic welding and fabricating drawings. The course covers the basic elements of a blueprint, weld symbols, joint types, structural shapes, developing a bill of material and using the imperial and metric systems of measurement.

Welding Safety
Your studies will focus on general safety as it applies to the welding trade. You will learn how to use fire fighting equipment and prepare the work area for safe welding operations.
WELD 104
Cutting Processes
You will acquire skill in using freehand and guided methods for cutting mild steel. The freehand method is used to make straight cuts in 14 gauge and straight cuts, beveled cuts and pierce holes in the plate. The guided method is used to do straight cuts, bevel cuts, and cut circles from plate. You will also be introduced to plasma arc cutting.

Gas Metal Arc Welding 1
You will be introduced to the gas metal arc welding process. The course content includes setting and adjusting the welding equipment for welding steel and aluminum. You will also receive an introduction to flux core welding.

Gas Metal Arc Welding 2
Building on the theory learned in WLDR 121, you will develop practical skills for welding steel aluminum and flux core welding.
WLDR 123
Oxy-Welding
You will learn how to safely operate and maintain oxyacetylene equipment used for welding. The course content includes the types of flames and their chemistry, the selection of filler metal and a comparison of fusion welding to braze welding.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding
You will be introduced to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process. The course content includes setting and adjusting the welding equipment for welding steel and electrode selection.

You will continue developing practical skills in using the SMAW process (including vertical fillets).

Description: Also known as maintenance mechanics, millwrights, or machine repairmen, industrial mechanics are employed in commercial or industrial operations that use machinery. Early Childhood Education Orientation [SIAST] | Humboldt
Description: This introductory course provides the minimum training required by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education in order to work as a child daycare worker. The curriculum emphasizes on the content and best practices in three core areas: child guidance; play and exploration; and health, safety and nutrition. This recently revised course is based on the Ministry’s new Play and Exploration Early Learning Program, the curriculum framework used for all childhood programs in the province.
